Hello, Creative Spirit!

I think we all have a creative spirit. What that spirit looks like, and how it appears in your life, is different for each of us.

For almost two decades, I set aside pursuit of art in order to focus on "real work". But during Covid, my need to make art re-emerged, and I started painting again.

In 2022, one of my painting teachers challenged me to watch a TED talk that Liz Gilbert gave in 2009, about how ancient Greeks and Romans believed that there is an attendant spirit that brings creativity. (This is an amazing talk and is worth watching, even if you have seen it before.)

After watching the talk, my teacher challenged me to paint my "studio genius" - the creative spirit that lives in my studio. This painting, that I now call Creative Spirit, is what emerged for me from that assignment.

She has been in my studio since that time, hanging on the wall over my desk. When I have open studio events, people seem drawn to her. My favorite exchange, overheard between two visitors, was something like this:
She: "I like her."
He: "...of course you do, she is inviting you to get your hands messy."
She: (pauses)... "well, yes. And I feel like she is inviting me to my life."

embracing creative spirit

I love the idea that creative spirit is an attendant spirit, one that Liz Gilbert visualizes as something like Dobby the House Elf.

I love that each of us has an attendant spirit. And I am sure it is true: I have seen it in those around me, often. Even when I could not see it in myself.

And I love the idea that our creative spirit is inviting us to our life.

perfect giclée starting point

After I started exploring the idea of offering fine art giclée prints, I realized that one of the advantages to offering gicléea is that I can offer reproductions of paintings for which the original is not available.

After my last Open Studio event, when the original Creative Spirit got so much attention, I knew she would be the first giclée I would offer.

giclée options

All of the prints that I am offering are the same quality, but there are two primary options:

the mini, an accessible open edition

  • Mini - open edition on 6x8 inch Hahnemühle paper. Image size: 5.75 in H x 4.5 in W
The mini is a fine art giclée print on 6x8in paper in an open edition, meaning it is not signed or numbered. These prints are printed to the same quality as the limited editions, and they have an embossed maker's mark and a Certificate of Authenticity. Because there is no limit to the print run, they will remain available after the limited editions are sold out.

limited edition prints

  • Limited edition on 8x10 inch Hahnemühle paper. Image size: 7.65 in H x 6 in W
  • Limited edition on 11x14 inch Hahnemühle paper. Image size: 11.5 in H x 9 in W
The limited editions are printed larger, to capture as much of the richness and detail of the original as possible. While more expensive than the mini, they are still affordable and offer an excellent value. The editions are limited to 50 of each of the two offered sizes, and no more limited editions of this piece will be created after these are sold out. When they're gone, they're gone.

envisioning creative spirit in your space

If you're trying to envision the three available sizes, here is a size comparison: the mini, 8x10, and 11x14, each matted with a 3" mat and framed in frame with a 3/4" profile.

are they really art?

These giclée prints are definitely art. Read more about giclée editions

what about framing?

It is definitely true that to make your giclée prints last, and to give them the most visible impact in a room, you will need to frame them. There are affordable options for framing, however. Read more about framing
